Hamartia is the fatal flaw leading to the downfall of a tragic hero or heroine. A narrative tool often determining a character’s arc (or fate) underpinning many of our favorite stories in film, literature, and music. Meredith Johnston, the singer-songwriter-producer at the heart of indie project Warm Human, borrowed the term for the title of her latest LP, and her first for Sooper Records. Hamartia finds Johnston probing the depths of own fatal flaw, self hatred, without skimping on the catchy hooks and bracingly frank lyricism. “This whole album is pop music for deranged people” she says.Johnston wrote and produced the album with Linz composer and producer Conor Mackey (Lynyn, Monobody, NNAMDÏ). Together, the pair crafted an album that draws liberally from its diverse influences, incorporating down-tempo electronics, drum n’ bass, indie rock, synth pop, and elegant, unstructured soundscapes. Hamartia finds humanity in electronic music, with warm synths, guitars, and shape-shifting vocal stacks frequently creating a one-woman choir.Hamartia is buoyed by the best music of Warm Human’s career, from the probing “Father Father” to the insightful “My Moods!!” and the musical dish session “Love 2 Hate.” Inspired by Portishead, Sheryl Crow, Frou Frou and others, the LP can be both wryly funny and incisive in the span of a single couplet (“I asked for space and you gave me the moon,” she sings on “My Moods!!” adding, “I’m riding shotgun with my shit attitude”). Chapter Music and French label Pop Superette team up to present the first ever vinyl reissue of Chapter boss Guy Blackman's 2008 album Adult Baby. Originally released on CD only, Adult Baby is a sumptuous collection of baroque pop tearjerkers, recorded over the course of three years by Casey Rice (Dirty Three, Liz Phair, Tortoise). The album features over 20 musicians, including Swedish pop star Jens Lekman (who sings a duet with Guy set in a men’s sauna on Dark & Quiet Place), Dirty Three's Mick Turner, Mike Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring/Total Control), plus a who's who of 2000s Australian indie including members of Crayon Fields, Art of Fighting, Fabulous Diamonds, Pikelet, Minimum Chips and more. The reissue has been lovingly remastered for vinyl by Casey Rice and features a bonus version of Gene Clark's Echoes recorded in classic high school band mode. Better known in recent years for his work co-managing Australian DIY label institution Chapter Music, Guy's other musical life has seen him support the likes of Joanna Newsom, Bill Callahan, Vashti Bunyan and Stereolab, touring the world with Jens Lekman, Tenniscoats, Mt Eerie and Dear Nora. September 23rd is the first release in William Basinski’s new Arcadia Archive series. Recorded in September 1982 in his first loft in the pre-gentrified DUMBO neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, September 23rd is a recently unearthed early entry in what has become a hugely inspirational and influential catalog. Built from a piano piece that Basinski composed in high school in the mid-1970s, September 23rd quickly evolved into a vastly different work. As Basinski explains: “The original piano recordings were made on on a piano belonging to my downstairs neighbor, John Epperson – later known more famously as world-renowned drag artist, Lypsinka – at 351 Jay Street aka Casa Degli Artisti, our first loft in New York. It was recoded with a little portable (probably Radio Shack) cassette deck sitting on the piano as I improvised a piece I had been working on since high school. It was pretty terrible, but when I did the John Giorno/William Burroughs cut-up technique, suddenly I had something to put through the Frippertronics loop and feedback loop tape delay system – and boy did I get results. A very prolific time for a young, wacked-out queen in NYC.”
