Following the digital release of "living in memory of something sweet" – released in July 2023 and tipped at Pitchfork, Stereogum, The Quietus, Brooklyn Vegan and more – dreamTX, the post-post rock project of Nick Das, will release the debut album on vinyl in May 2024.
Nick Das is a multi-instrumentalist and producer from Dallas. Das has quietly been recording and performing across the Austria since 2016, playing electronic guitar in shoegaze group Kraus, sometimes co-writing with Maggie Rogers, and making his own early albums that bear the bent-toothed twang of Modest Mouse, a striving formalism and regard for words. "living in memory of something sweet" marks his debut album under the dreamTX alias – a nod to Terisius Nash, the logic of sleep and grand southern skies.
In 2019 he made a break away from the new frontier of Texas, away from Drag City worship, and towards Woodstock, the spiritual grounds of the first great awakening. Life became swirls of density: Hudson School hues, sanded brown, pine green, bugs and heat, intensity, exercise, and working himself up mountains. Real freedom and aloneness.
This is where he recorded most of the album. During the process of this he devised a new way of thinking about songs, mapping their structures according to the linearity of an out-and-back trail system wherein you traverse new ground, sounds, and melodies for half the song, and then retrace those same parts in reverse, but through a re-tinkered, degraded lens, where there’s recognizable elements from before (a musical phrase, a chord), but re-contextualized in new spaces (magnified or pushed into the distance, crunched, mangled, or echoing and smeared together... ) to create a progressive arrangement out of the same materials, like patchwork of Japanese boro.

When J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. and long-time friend Dave Sweetapple decided to form a hard rock band, they found conspirators Kyle Thomas and Asa Irons, in the local avant-folk outfit Feathers. Witch's self-titled debut harkens back to the classic heavy metal sound of the 70s with the “all in" assault of modern rock and roll production and neatly side-steps "Stoner Rock” pigeonholes by packing more righteous riffs into a single jam than their contemporaries combined. This now classic eponymous debut released in 2006 features Mascis' return to his first love, drums, with unbridled passion that recalls Deep Wound and his 80s hardcore roots. Kyle, a.k.a. King Tuff's wails explore the juxtaposition inherent in a post-modern tribute to lost spirit. Sweetapple adds additional weight with massive, crunching bass lines and Graham Clise, guitar-slinger extraordinary from righteous punks Annihilation Time, Lecherous Gaze, Rot TV, and now Stepmother, rounds out the line-up with his liquid fire leads and classic punk energy. Witch followed up their now classical debut with engineer John Agnello, already familiar with Mascis from producing Dinosaur Jr. and J Mascis + The Fog (as well as Cindy Lauper and Screaming Trees, to name a few) and "Paralyzed” was released in 2008, delivering even speedier riffs and raging backbeats that allowed the band's punk and thrash roots to shine through.

In his 13 years recording as How To Dress Well, LA-based musician Tom Krell has played with the concept of what we hear and how we communicate in order to create music that exists somewhere between celestial transcendence and an outsider approach to what pop music can be. In Krell’s musical world, the weight of a sample comes from his history with it, the meaning of a lyric fragment is stretched and distorted, its core skirting universal interpretation in favor of specificity. On new album "I Am Toward You", his first new music in nearly six years, Krell was in search of a return to the open-hearted, uncynical approach to music making that he adopted as a kid, and carried through the release of his haunting breakthrough debut, 2010’s Love Remains, when he was making music in relative anonymity with little external pressure. He sifted through hundreds of snippets he’d recorded in the preceding decade, finding inexplicable samples and snatches of audio that began to cohere into an album that stripped back the density of previous albums to create some of his noisiest, most free, and most poetic music to date,

Tulsa, Oklahoma's Unwed Sailor have been on a tear over the past few years. Following a quiet phase through much of the 2010s, they reëmerged with the aptly titled Heavy Age (2019), and two more full-lengths, Truth Or Consequences (2021) and Mute The Charm (2023), that chart a remarkable evolution of their bass-led, pop-leaning post rock. On Underwater Over There – their ninth LP overall – a current of 80s goth and jangle-pop runs beneath a litany of memorable hooks and compositional left turns, creating a propulsive and intricate world of sound. The band worked collectively on all elements of mixing and production to craft a meticulously layered environment, while maintaining an air of spontaneity and experimentation across the set. Early standout, "Final Feather", drifts through varying landscapes of airiness and haze on a high-neck bass hook, while the hum of voices adds a contrast of angelic comfort. Bearing influence from New Order and The Cure in particular, its balance of gravitas and shimmer is the result of founding member Johnathon Ford's intuitive writing method: the lead bass line comes first, followed by supporting melodies, drums, guitars, keys, and final detailing. "Dusty" is a prime example of this process, as Ford's powerful, low-end groove anchors a full-spectrum array of guitars, bells, and arpeggiations along with Matt Putman's energetic drum section. Its fluid pacing provides a perfect establishing shot, with shifting moods that gather into a coda guided by David Swatzell's harmonized, glittering guitar riffs – a sunrise after a moonless night. In quick succession, "Blue Tangier" widens the aperture with a pounding percussive refrain, vibrant bass tone and an unforgettable, fuzzed-out melodic motif. Sprawling centerpiece, "Junko", is a loose callback to 2003's The Marionette and The Music Box, its deliberate stride and interwoven melodies evoking the hands of a mechanical clock, and the anticipation of something long-awaited but nebulous. It drifts effortlessly from innocence to intrigue, expands into a mesmerizing howl, and vanishes abruptly into mist. "Antoinette" conveys many of Unwed Sailor's unique strengths in a tight four minutes, as its mysterious, wah-wah melody snarls across a massive and deeply textured bed of percussion, pulsing with the kinetic push of a steam engine, equal parts beauty and brutality. Title track, "Underwater Over There", commences the final act with aquatic synthesizer loops that ease into chorus-tinged bass and towers of rich melody and counterpoint. This patient fortitude carries into the penultimate piece, "Bend the Air", which offers the album's most cinematic passage, a climax of emotional release and breathless exhilaration. By contrast, the brief closer, "V & V", is a balladic, piano-led ode to Ford's cats, Voodoo and Veruca; you can easily imagine them resting in a sunbeam, as its backdrop of field recordings nods to the bustling world outside. While honoring their forebears in winks and nods, Unwed Sailor remain totally inimitable in their approach and style, twenty-five years into an acclaimed career. The band's clear vision for Underwater Over There has yielded some of their most indelible work, and their inventive, passionate approach gives a strong sense of plenty more beyond the horizon.

Melbourne pop eccentric Gregor releases his fourth album Satanic Lullabies, his deepest and darkest record yet. In the years since his first album, 2016's Thoughts & Faults, Gregor's music has got progressively odder, more challenging and more rewarding. The spacious, acerbic pop of Silver Drop (2018), featuring touching single A Song About Holding Hands, was followed by the lovesick Destiny (2020), which put Gregor's inquisitive pop through a warped filter. Now Satanic Lullabies has polar extremes of wide-eyed innocence and deep despair. There are moments of great musical beauty that segue into harsh, bleak soundscapes. "I'm seeking to draw attention to the similarities between heaven and hell," says Gregor, "and to comfort anyone who recognises these." Satanic Lullabies is a modern epic, a bedroom odyssey, like if pre-MAGA Kanye made a Disney soundtrack. Gregor's live show ranges from solo mode up to a ten piece band, and he has played festivals such as Golden Plains, Dark Mofo, Inner Varnika, Boogie and The Others Way (NZ). He was nominated for Best Album and Best Solo Artist in the 2019 Music Victoria Awards, and Best Pop Act in 2021.
