It's been four years since Cherry Glazerr released their resplendent third album Stuffed and Ready, but Clementine Creevy has been in no rush. "I've spent these years taking a hard look at myself, at my relationships, and writing about it," she says. "I guess I'm coming to terms with a lot of my bullshit." Cherry Glazerr has been on the road more often than not since Creevy was still in high school, and when the pandemic hit, she immersed herself in a static existence she’d been deprived of. Creevy describes Cherry Glazerr's ambitious new album, I Don't Want You Anymore, as some of her most personal, raw music to date, a collection of songs that elaborate on this period of self-reckoning. It's the first she's produced since Cherry Glazerr's garage rock debut, Haxel Princess, released nearly a decade ago when Creevy was a teenager. Creevy describes I Don't Want You Anymore as a "mature" album, moreso in reference to her personal growth than a reflection of the record, which in true Cherry Glazerr fashion is best described as Extremely Fun. To make it, Creevy linked up with producer Yves Rothman, who's best known for his work with Yves Tumor. Lead single "Soft Like a Flower" exemplifies that growth. A murky guitar riff inaugurates the track, before Creevy's unguarded vocals enter the mix. She sings of a consuming obsession and is joined on the chorus by longtime bandmate Sami Perez. It's proudly emotive, what Creevy calls an "Evanescence moment." "It's a real 'losing your fucking shit' kind've vibe," she says. "I wanted this album to be just heart and soul. Completely exposed." I Don't Want You Anymore uses the element of surprise to its advantage; each track is a radical reimagination of what Cherry Glazerr is and can be. "Bad Habit" opens with a spiraling vocal loop that Creevy began recording at home and it expands into a delirious downtempo dance track without ever invoking a guitar. The subsequent track, "Ready for You" is sung in funky staccato and the initially spare bassline on the opening verse is eventually overtaken by a massive, staticky guitar riff that reminds you this is, at its heart, a rock album. These are songs to soundtrack the listener's life, a score to suit any occasion. The titular track makes a promise to an unnamed other, but the repeating lyrics on the bridge could just as easily serve as a love letter to listeners: "In the end, you're always holding me."

The female-led discodelic soul band Say She She, named as a silent nod to Nile Rodgers (C'est chi-chi!: It's Chic!), release their sophomore album 'Silver' on the heels of an epic break-out year that grows brighter by the day. The three strong voices of Piya Malik (El Michels Affair staple feature, and former backing singer for Chicano Batman), Sabrina Mileo Cunningham and Nya Gazelle Brown front the band. This harmonizing trio was formed in a classic New York tale of friends that met by following the music: the downtown dancefloors, through the Lower East Side floorboards and up to the rooftops of Harlem. 'Silver' was entirely written and recorded live to tape at Killion Sound studio in North Hollywood earlier this year and produced by Sergio Rios (of Orgone). While these analog recording techniques help root Say She She’s sound in a bedrock of tonal warmth that only tape can achieve, it is also their process of cutting the track in the moment and capturing the magic of communal creativity that has seen their sound described as "a glorious overload of joyful elation and spiritual elevation" (MOJO) and "infused with the wonky post-disco spirit of early '80s NYC" (The Guardian). Silver, the element, is known as the metal of self-confidence and the mirror of the soul. With that, the 16-song double-LP projects not only their growth in writing with confidence, but also reflects a deeper exploration into their punk-chic, femme-forward sensibility. Ultimately, 'Silver' oozes with quirk and adventure and embraces the multifaceted nature of what it means to be a modern femme. The She She's fully embrace their role as beauticians, actively reminding people of the inherent beauty in the world. They skillfully employ double entendres and humor to encourage open dialogue and fearlessly address important matters that demand attention.

Despite its title, JOBS - Soft Sounds is a full-spectrum sonic experience best played loud, one that crackles with clarity and urgency. The album represents a creative leap forward for the quartet, one that finds them fusing uniquely human gestures with precise repetition, creating an overall sound with distant echoes of folk songs, IDM, and 1970s jazz fusion.
Recorded during drummer Max Jaffe’s recording residency at Brooklyn’s Pioneer Works, the sessions coincided with significant life changes for each member of JOBS. Some moved across the US. Family formations grew, shrank, and shifted. All four members made moves in their own careers, musically and beyond. For bassist Ro Lundberg, this music also developed alongside an expanding view of their own gender, informing their contributions. Though the band arrived at these sessions with only a couple of guitarist Dave Scanlon’s melodies, Lundberg’s harmonic structures, and violist Jessica Pavone’s lines of lyrics, the sense of autonomy afforded by the residency allowed them to write, record, edit, and mix in a semi-concurrent flow state.
The idea of description creates a throughline across Soft Sounds. Lyrically, description and data dominate songs like parts 1 and 2 of “List The Creator Twice,” which meditate on the voyeuristic nature of description. “There is Differing” plays with and pushes English’s sometimes rigid language binary: around gender as well as the divide between the self and others.
Throughout Soft Sounds, the sonic palette expands and contracts as each song sees fit. In JOBS’ music, Mark Hollis-type abstraction sits comfortably alongside grooves inspired by Jaffe’s time in Malawi. Their immersive sonic spaces suggest the speaker-test work of Ryoji Ikeda offset by soft-synth wobbles that recall an asexual reimagining of “brostep.” It’s in this reordering of the familiar and foreign that JOBS’ fluid approach reveals a sense of playful wonder and depth.

Rabbit Rabbit is the fourth studio album by Philadelphia-based Speedy Ortiz, and their first since 2018. Co-produced with Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties and recorded in the nearly-alien desert landscapes of Joshua Tree’s Rancho de la Luna and El Paso’s Sonic Ranch, Rabbit Rabbit reaffirms Speedy Ortiz’s desire to push themselves politically and musically, vital and surprising as ever. Since its inception in 2011, Speedy Ortiz has radiated exuberance and dynamism like few other rock bands, having produced an expansive and critically revered discography, toured worldwide, and inspired next generations of bands with inventive songwriting and advocacy to better the music industry. Songwriter, guitarist and singer Sadie Dupuis has remained busy as well, releasing solo music (and collaborating with the likes of Lizzo, The New Pornographers, Ben Lee and Backxwash) under the moniker Sad13, publishing two poetry books, and running the Carpark Records imprint and literary journal, Wax Nine (Spacemoth, Johanna Warren, Melkbelly). Rabbit Rabbit is Speedy Ortiz’s first album to feature longtime touring members Audrey Zee Whitesides (bass) and Joey Doubek (drums), who are now full time contributors alongside Dupuis and Andy Molholt (guitar).

Ratboys have been recording and releasing music for over a decade, but their newest album, The Window, marks the first time they’d ever traveled outside their home base of Linz to make a record, journeying to the Hall of Justice Recording Studio in Seattle to work with producer Chris Walla. The sessions with Walla (Death Cab for Cutie, Tegan and Sara, Foxing) struck the perfect balance between preparation and experimentation, injecting new life into the band’s style of soft-hearted Midwestern indie rock with an ever so subtle Americana twist. The solidified Ratboys lineup stretched and expanded their vision in the studio, adding unexpected elements and instruments like rototoms, talkboxes, and fiddles. The result is Ratboys’ most sonically diverse record, shifting wildly from track to track. It flexes everything from fuzzy power pop choruses on “Crossed That Line” and “It’s Alive!” to a warm country twang on “Morning Zoo” to mournful folk on the titular track. After more than ten years and four studio albums, The Window finally captures Ratboys as they were always meant to be heard—expansive while still intimate, audacious while still tender—the sound of four friends operating as a single, cohesive unit.

The new quickly, quickly EP finds Portland, Oregon's Graham Jonson back in his home studio, engrossed in '60s psychedelic soul music, imagining some bygone era where it was all about the drum sounds and tape decay. He calls it Easy Listening; the songs are short and inviting, modest yet loaded with ideas. Each started with the drum part, a loose grid for Jonson to paint his idiosyncratic psych-pop across, again playing nearly every instrument. The set follows his 2021 LP, The Long And The Short of It, the 22-year-old musician's debut on Ghostly International, a coming-of-age jump from the chill beats-oriented corners of the internet to a full-fledged songwriting project with hi-fi sophistication. The moment culminated with Pitchfork’s Rising profile, "quickly, quickly's Technicolor Pop Bursts Beyond the Algorithm," and kickstarted the formation of his 6-piece live band for a run of exploratory shows along the west coast. But as the tangible demands for his music pulled him outward and some growing pains in his personal life ensued, Jonson focused his energy back inside; to the comforts of home recording, filling his space with more gear and sessions with friends. Maybe a bit of a droll title for a hard time, Easy Listening briefly pauses for air, offering five of his breeziest basement jams for public enjoyment. That basement is home to racks of synthesizers and an array of drum machines, guitars, bongos, xylophones, and the like. One notable addition to the Easy Listening setup was the Teac reel-to-reel tape machine he found on eBay and hooked up to Ableton. "I used it frequently to add color/texture to the project by running individual instruments through and warping the tape with my finger. After I had finished all the songs, I ran the full mix of every song in a row through the tape to add one more layer of low-fidelity weirdness.""Colors" opens the portal to Jonson's retro-tinged dream world; a symphonic section pulls the curtain back to reveal a drum kit spattering rapid fills as the bassline grooves deeply between organ shimmers and hazy hums. The din of what sounds like a '60s church service appears here and throughout the collection; the words are blurred by decades of tape mold, adding to an overall hypnotic, disorienting feel."Satellite," one of Jonson's funkiest and catchiest tracks to date, is either a love letter to technology or a tongue-in-cheek song about surveillance. The jazzy percussion taps from the get-go as he peppers clever lines to his subject in the sky, at one point losing his wallet (evoking the comedic tone of Thundercat's "Captain Stupido"), before riding out on a squealing synth solo. The campy, softly psychedelic "Falling Apart Without You" is in the vein of Stereolab. It started out as a fictional breakup song but ultimately became a self-fulfilling prophecy. The only cut from the EP that Jonson and his band have played live so far, it's easy to picture it translating on stage; the lovesick singer flanked by a tight ensemble on keys, bass, and drums. Next, he slows it down for "Photobook," the first half is an organ-led ballad for self-improvement — "I think I can, think I can…" Jonson trails off into a rhythmic reverie. We end on the wistful, soulful "Natural Form," featuring The Long And The Short of It collaborator Elliot Cleverdon on strings. "I can't say goodbye," are Jonson's parting words; it's a sweet outro, some healing for him, and for us as fans, it's a lovely place to leave quickly, quickly for now.
